The macadamia nut was first discovered (by Europeans) after the settlement of Australia, although Indigenous Australians had been eating and processing it for many years. Macadamia oil is highly versatile for cooking, cosmetics, and personal care. The oil has long been used in cooking, as it is excellent for frying due to its high smoke point.

It can also be stored for over a year without any refrigeration. In cosmetics, the oil is generally used in thicker creams because it is heavier and has a more luxurious feel. Macadamia oil can also help block harmful sun rays, which is why it is often used in sun lotions. Perhaps most notably, the oil closely resembles sebum, which the skin naturally produces to protect itself.
